Best time to visit: May-June, September-October (harvest season)

Go for this:
World renowned wine with a long history and tradition -- winemaking has been a part of Ribera culture throughout every period of history since the Roman times; amazing local food like roast lamb; beautiful scenery and wildlife along the Ruta del Vino; and charming small villages that have so much untouched history to discover.

But try this:
The village of Peñafiel, with a spectacular historic castle, housing a wine museum in its impressive stonewalls and turrets. As you pass through the region, look out for the zarceras (or stone chimneys) that go deep underground into the caves that used to store wine in ancient times.

Favorite guest experience:
Hop into a hot air balloon and go for a leisurely ride through the skies of Ribera del Duero, enjoying an incredible view as you float above vineyards and valleys throughout the region. Then, visit a renowned winery and enjoy a typical lunch accompanied by local wines.

Favorite hotel:
Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine, a wine estate housed in a former abbey, with superb service and excellent cuisine at its Michelin-star restaurant, Refectorio. The estate covers 1,730 acres of land with 500 acres of vineyards.

Favorite restaurant:
Fuente Aceña in Peñafiel, a rustic-chic restaurant with exposed stone walls and wood beam ceilings, serving amazing seafood dishes, and overlooking the Duero River

Foods:

- Lechazo Asado (roast lamb)
- Sheep’s Cheese
- Chorizos Botagueños
(typical sausage of the region)

Wine:
- Tempranillo (Tinto Fino)
- Garnacha
- Albillo
